Proteas batting bombs in Adelaide run chase

09 Nov 2018, 21:37 GMT+10

Cape Town - The Proteas bombed in their run chase against Australia in Adelaide on Friday, losing by 7 runs in the 2nd ODI.

Chasing just 232 for victory, the South African batting line-up again provided reason for concern as preparations for next year's World Cup continue.

SCOREBOARD: Australia v Proteas, 2nd ODI

The visitors just didn't bat deep enough and finished on 224/9 all out in 50 overs.

The result leaves the series tied at 1-1 going into Sunday's third and final clash in Hobart.

Having won the toss and elected to bowl, the Proteas were again impressive with the ball.

Had the Australian tail not wagged, the hosts would have fallen well short of their eventual total of 231 all out.

Kagiso Rabada (4/54) was the chief destroyer, while Dwaine Pretorius (3/32) and a resurgent Dale Steyn (2/31) were superb in their 10-over spells.

Steyn continues to shine on his return to international cricket and was reaching speeds of up to 145 kph.

The batting, though, is where the Proteas are struggling and that proved to be the case once more as they stumbled their way through the run chase.

Faf du Plessis (47) and David Miller (51) threatened to get the job done for the visitors, but there was little else in the way of resistance as the Aussies drew the series level.

The third and final ODI on Sunday starts at 04:50 (SA time).

Scores in brief:

Australia 231 in 48.3 (Carey 47, Lynn 44, Rabada 4/54, Pretorius 3/32, Steyn 2/31)

SA 224/9 in 50 overs (Miller 51, Du Plessis 47, Stoinis 3/35)

Australia won by 7 runs
